The MIABC is looking for a strategic and team-focused Manager of Claims and Legal to support our General Counsel in leading our claims and legal team. The MIABC is a member-owned non-profit insurance reciprocal that provides liability coverage to over 168 local governments in British Columbia, and property and ancillary coverage to over half of our members. 

Responsibilities Include: 
Core Leadership Responsibilities 
  • Support the General Counsel in leading and managing the Claims and Legal Department, including staff supervision, workload oversight, coaching, mentoring, professional development and performance management where appropriate. 
  • Conduct regular team meetings, as well as one-on-one check-ins and performance reviews with direct reports.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture.
  • Serve as a member of the management team, contributing to strategic planning and executing special projects.
  • Propose and implement organizational initiatives to support organizational strategy, including process improvements.
Claims Management
  • Collaborate with the General Counsel to oversee the allocation of claims.
  • Work together with the General Counsel to report significant claims to executive management, reinsurers, actuaries, and other relevant parties. 
  • Monitor claims trends and recommend loss control strategies.
  • Personally manage a file load of complex or high-value claims. Analyze liability exposure, quantify losses, and set reserves in line with applicable policies.
  • Direct independent adjusters, consultants, and legal counsel as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of claims documentation and communications.
Legal Management
  • Review and analyze internal and external litigation data and oversee cost recovery processes.
  • Collaborate with the General Counsel to provide legal advice to the Board and management team.
  • Prepare legal department reports and summaries.
  • Coordinate legal education initiatives.
  • Assist with corporate commercial matters and special projects.
Member Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members and other partners.
  • Provide superior member service and promptly and thoroughly resolve member concerns.
  • Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and educational seminars.
Other Duties
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant legislation and internal risk management practices.
  • Chair and/or participate in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) committees.
  • Stay current on industry, legislative, and organizational changes impacting claims and legal operations.
  • Participate in special projects and miscellaneous assignments as required.
Position Qualifications include: 
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in claims adjusting, claims examination, or insurance defence litigation, with a law degree preferred. 
  • Professional designation such as a CIP or CRM preferred, with a post-secondary degree in law and a strong knowledge of liability insurance (bodily injury, property damage, errors & omissions) and insurance law an asset. 
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, staff management, and/or coaching.
  • Self-driven with a proven ability to lead change.
  • A growth mindset, with a proven ability to promote innovation and continuous improvement is an asset. 
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills; ability to handle pressure in a time constrained environment. 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple cases and deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and analytical ability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with a strong focus on customer service and relationship management.

Permanent full-time

Pay Range:   

$140,000 to $175,000
