2024 MIABC Risk Management Conference: Call for Speakers Now Open!

Session

The MIABC’s 2024 Risk Management Conference will be held April 3 – 5, 2024 at the JW Marriot Parq Hotel in Vancouver, BC.   The conference gives our members the forum to discuss risk management and insurance subjects with their peers and MIABC staff.  Our goal is to provide insurance and risk education to all areas of local government operations, ranging from introductory to advanced topics. Our two-and half-day program provides our attendees with useful ideas and creative solutions to help BC local governments manage their wide variety of risks and our goal is to send attendees back to the office equipped with tools and practical advice to help empower them to make the best risk informed decisions.

The theme for the 2024 conference is From Plan to Pivot, focusing on providing attendees with adaptable risk management strategies to address rapid change and the flexibility required by local governments to manage the accompanying risks.  This entails the need to pivot and adapt in response to various factors, including extreme weather events, asset management, emerging risks, rapid technological shifts and abrupt changes in staffing and resources.

We like to fill our two- and half-day program with sessions that are fun, engaging, and interactive, and that take on a variety of forms such as fireside chats, lectures, workshops, or dramatic performances.   The 2024 conference will feature approximately 15 concurrent session slots, and regrettably, we may not be able to accommodate all submitted proposals. Based on feedback from our attendees, we suggest incorporating the following elements into your proposed session to increase your chances of being chosen:

  • Participation from a local or First Nation government.
  • Utilization of real-life situations or scenarios as learning experiences to present a case study or lessons learned type of session.
  • Including practical and feasible advice or guidance that attendees can readily implement.

We encourage you to think beyond financial and administrative aspects and consider sessions that also benefit other areas of local government operations such as public works, building and land use, emergency operations or parks and recreation. As always, proposed sessions should have a risk management focus and not promote the sale of a service or product. Selected speakers will be required to provide attendees with a a one-page takeaway.

Please note that this is not a paid speaking opportunity. The submission of a completed proposal form does not, in any way, guarantee the speaker(s) a slot on the program. Session proposals may also be considered for inclusion in our webinar programming in 2024.
